“Okay, Y/N, it’s your turn, we’ve let you watch for long enough now.” One of the guys from the other side of the circle pointed at you.
You’d tried to avoid being picked ever since the game started over half an hour ago, and you were only there because your boyfriend Zach was, and you hadn’t seen him in weeks.
Zach Dempsey was there through all your firsts. First boyfriend, first kiss (under the moonlight on a slightly chilly evening at the beach), first all-nighter (same aforementioned moonlight night), first date (he took you to his favourite restaurant and then a romantic walk), first time (he was gentle and caring), even first heartbreak (although things soon worked themselves out).
But Zach and you just fit. Like the last two puzzle pieces to make the picture.
Generally however, you weren’t a people person. And parties with big groups of people weren’t your thing. It had taken a long time for Zach to break you out of your shell, and even then it was only in front of him privately. The rest of the world still viewed you as the shy, innocent, quiet girl with no worldliness.
“Okay.” You swallowed, not really seeing how you could avoid the situation now.
“Truth or dare, Y/N?” Bryce pressed.
“Um, truth, I guess.” You shrugged.
Bryce gave a snakey smile to Montgomery sat on his left. “How many people have you had sex with?” He chuckled boyishly, swigging his beer.
Colour rushed to your cheeks and your eyes widened at the question. The heat of your cheeks making you sweat slightly, and giving a small gulp. “I- uhh-“
“Don’t be an ass Bryce, this is Truth or Dare not ‘embarrass my girlfriend’.” Zach piped up, laying a comforting hand on your knee.
“Rule Is she has to answer.” Monty snorted.
“You don’t.” Zach turned to you and spoke only to you.
But the damage had already been done. The boys could already tell Zach was the only person you’d been with, and this information was what they’d wanted. They exchanged looks. Greedy looks.
“Don’t worry,” Bryce held up a hand, “we don’t want to make you feel under pressure.” He said with faux sympathy.
“Never.” Nodded Monty, not concealing his smirk very well.
“This Game Is getting dry anyway. I think it’s time we finish up.” Bryce stood, sending one last look your way before taking his nasty self and his bottle to the kitchen.
“Cmon.” Zach held out a hand to you and helped you up, and you caught in your peripheral vision Monty following Bryce in to the kitchen, eyes on the two of you. “Let’s go outside for a bit.” Zach laced his fingers through yours.
“Yeah.” You gave him a relieved smile and the two of you headed to the garden.
———
About 10 minutes previously, you’d let Zach off to go and talk to Jeff and his other friends, as Sheri had come to talk to you. But Sheri had just been dragged off by a boy, and now you were sat at the garden table by yourself. It seemed like a good idea to you to head to the kitchen for another drink, so you did.
After filling your cup, your bladder notified you that it needed emptying. The downstairs toilet was occupied, so you’d have to head to the upstairs one.
Unfortunately, that was occupied too. You sighed, leaning against the wall.
“Hey,”
It was Monty. He’d just reached the top of the stairs and noticed you.
“Hi.” You smiled politely, still feeling a little red from the earlier encounter.
“Toilet line?” He laughed, pointing at the door.
You laughed lightly, “Yeah.”
It was quiet for a bit, the two of you exchanging polite smiles and the odd snicker. Then Monty pushed off the banister and care to stand beside you.
“The game was fun, right?” He said in a low voice.
“It’s uh- not really my thing.”
“Well, I liked finding out more about everyone.” Monty’s finger looped around the belt loop on your jeans. You look down at his hand grazing your hip, and felt lost for words. Frozen.
“Uh-“ You stuttered.
“Shhhh, Zach’s not here.” He whispered, placing his other hand on the small of your back.
“Yes he fucking is.” Over by the stairs was Zach, stony-faced and looking like he was going to actually strangle Monty to death. He stormed over and pulled the boy off you, trapping Monty’s neck with his arm.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!” He spat in the jock’s face.
“Dude, chill out! We were just talking!” He protested, voice strained.
“That’s not an okay way to ‘talk’ to a girl, especially not my girlfriend.” Zach growled.
You’d never seen Zach this angry before. He was usually really good at keeping his temper and not many things actually made him that mad.
“I’m gonna fucking kill you.”
“Zach! No.” You butted in. Sure, Monty was a sleaze, but you didn’t want Zach to have that on his conscience. Zach locked eyes with you, and melted. He pushed off of Monty.
“Get out of here before I change my mind.”
Monty scurried off, laughing.
“Are you okay, Y/N?” Zach rushed towards you and placed a hand on your cheek. You nodded.
“He’s just an asshole.” You shook your head, you could feel a tear well up in one eye, and tried to push it back.
Noticing, Zach pulled your face into his chest and let you sob, stroking your hair and kissing the top of your head.
“I’m here.” He whispered. “I love you, and I’m here”
